Hebrides House is in the village of Timsgearraidh, which overlooks Uig Sands (or Traigh Mhor as the locals call it). It is a bay that floods each tide, and is edged by a river flowing down from the hills on one side, sandy beaches on the other. Named by Conde Nast Traveller as one of the top 34 beaches in the world in 2024, words don’t really do justice to the beauty and changeability of the location.

Beyond the beach are the hills of Uig looking down to Harris, which are paradise for hikers and climbers. Back through the glen to Valtos which is the ideal beach for younger kids, or Reef beach which stretches for what seems like miles.

You can explore the area’s rich history and Gaelic culture, and a great place to start is the local museum at the top of the village (and Uig Sands is where the Lewis Chessmen were discovered in 1831). And no trip to Lewis would be complete without seeing the Calanais Stones and the Broch, which are around a 30 minute drive from the house.

The Isles of Lewis and Harris are somewhere that inspires a broad range of artists, and there are numerous galleries and studios you can visit in the summer season.

As for food, overlooking the village of Timsgearraidh is Uig Sands restaurant, which has a spectacular view and equally wonderful food showcasing local seafood. In the village itself is the very well stocked community shop, and the community cafe where the baking would put Mary Berry to shame.
