How to get to Uig.
There are two ways to get to Uig in the Outer Hebrides. You can fly or you can catch the ferry.
Our journey to Uig involves us leaving London at 7pm, driving through the night which sees you arriving in Pitlochry in the Scottish Highlands at around 3am. The most magical part of the trip is then watching the sun rise over the Highlands as you head north to Inverness, then take the turning for Ullapool and one of the most spectacular roads in the world.
Get to Ullapool at around 8am, and have a delicious breakfast at the Ceilidh Place, with time to have a walk on the shore. On to the ferry for the journey to Stornoway, then the drive from Stornoway to Uig, arriving around 1pm.
If you’d rather a more sedate and civilised journey, there is more detail below on the various travel options for getting to the islands.
Drive via Ullapool
This route is faster if you are coming up from down south - from Edinburgh, Glasgow or England.
Once past the central belt, you drive up the A9 to Inverness, then take the (very beautiful) scenic route over to Ullapool before boarding the ferry to Stornoway. It is around three hours from Glasgow or Edinburgh to Inverness, and around one hour from Inverness to Ullapool.
The journey time between Ullapool and Stornoway is 2 hours 30 minutes, and there are two sailings a day in summer, slightly less in winter. Stornoway is the capital of the Outer Hebrides, and there you’ll find two large supermarkets plus a host of other speciality shops, restaurants, pubs and hotels.
From Stornoway, the drive to Hebrides House will take you approximately 50 minutes.
If you’ve time in Ullapool, do drop into the Ceilidh Place for a coffee or a meal - it is where we got married 20 years ago.
Please check the ferry time table and book your ticket in advance.
Drive via Skye
If you have time to make a proper trip of your journey to Hebrides House, then this route takes in many of the most beautiful landscapes of Scotland - through Glencoe, to the Isle of Skye, and then through Harris before reaching Uig in all its glory.
The ferry takes 2 hours 15 minutes and the drive from Tarbert to Uig is around 90 minutes.
Fly to Stornoway
You can fly direct to Stornoway from Inverness, Glasgow or Edinburgh. The journey takes approximately 40 minutes (slightly less from Inverness), and at the airport you can hire a car then drive the 45 minutes to Hebrides House.
Depending on where you are coming from, you can either book directly this journey with Loganair, or if you are coming from London you can book directly with British Airways for all parts of the journey.
The journey time from London to Stornoway is usually around 4 hours depending on which flights you choose. You can fly from Heathrow, Gatwick or London City to either Edinburgh or Glasgow. Alternatively, there is an Easyjet route to Inverness, and can then book Loganair separately.
